Have you ever been so broke that you couldn’t pay attention? I mean so broke that lint in your pockets was a plus!! Have you ever been so broke that you had absolutely no options, nowhere and no one to turn to? Years ago that was my story. I was 23, married and had 5 children under the age of 8. Yes, my husband and I had good jobs making what we thought was good money yet we were still broke. Our credit was shot. Most months our bank account was $300 in the red! Rent was due and so were the rest of the bills. The children needed clothes, shoes and everything else that children need. Did I mention my husband had 3 children that he was paying $1000+ a month in child support?
My husband and I wanted financial freedom and we wanted it badly. We wanted to have more money than month, we wanted to be able to take family vacations, we wanted to be able to pay our bills on time and in full, we wanted a savings account, we wanted stocks and bonds, we wanted to own our own home. Most of all we wanted to leave a legacy for our children and grandchildren.
That was a low point in my life. I didn’t have anything that was worth anything. I had nothing tangible to call my own except the clothes on my back, the furniture in my home and the beat up old car that we shared. I felt worthless, as a mother, as a woman, as a wife. My stress level was through the roof. I felt hopeless!
I worked at a bank and was well-educated in finance, so it wasn’t hard for me to figure out how I got into this mess. I knew I had to do something and do it quickly, because my family was sinking fast. I sat down with my bills, my bank account statement and my notebook. At that point, the only thing to do was file bankruptcy. I sat in my attorney’s office and, I cried because I felt like a failure. I made a vow to myself and to my family that we would never see these days again, and that my children would never know poverty. When I left my attorney’s office I felt as if a burden had been lifted off of my shoulders. As I drove home I devised a plan; I went back to the drawing board. I took all the financial education I received from my grandmother and from my co-workers at the bank and began to put it into action. This time I placed myself and my family on a spending plan, we began to save money and pay off debt. From that day forward I have taken a no nonsense approach to finance and investing. I defined what financial freedom looked like for me. If this hadn’t have worked, I could have lost everything that I valued most, my most precious possessions, my children.
That was years ago, and from that time on I worked hard to clean up my credit from a 420 score to a 740. My husband and I built a nice nest egg for our retirement, and if we are called home to Glory today, we are leaving behind a legacy for our children and grandchildren. Today, I am able to do the things I love, such as, spend time spoiling my grandchildren by taking them on mini vacations just because, taking them shopping or to a movie, treat myself to nice makeup and travel.
